Will the Vivo X21 be able to make a different identity among the other smartphones? Let’s know in the full Vivo X21 review.
China’s smart phone maker Vivo has made a separate place by presenting under-display fingerprint scanner technology in the market. This year the company had shown Vivo Apex, which was a concept smartphone. Vivo came in with this limelight. Vivo finally launched X21 with this technology in Indian market for Rs 35,990. But the question is whether in-display fingerprint technology will see some changes in the market. Let’s know in this device’s review.
- Vivo X21 is India’s first smartphone which comes with in-display fingerprint scanner.
- This device is equipped with Snapdragon 660 SoC and 6 GB RAM.
- X21 Android 8.1 works on Oreo.
Vivo X21 Design
Seeing Vivo X21, it seems that this phone looks like the first phone V9. Some small changes have been made in the device, in which the 3.5mm headphone jack has been shifted to the top of the device. At the same time, the fingerprint scanner is placed in the back of the display in the device instead of the back. Also looks like V9 in device viewing. The company has replaced it with USB Type-C instead of Micro USB.
Speaker grill and front facing camera is in the notch given on top of the display. At the same time, Micro USB ports, SIM trays, microphones and speaker grill are present in the bottom. The 3.5mm headphone jack and microphone are placed on top of the device.
In the device coming with the dual camera setup, the LED flash device is in the top left corner of the back corner. We have seen similarly in V9. You will miss the iPhone X by looking at the camera module setup and LED position given in X21. At the same time, the volume rocker and the power button are present in the right side of the device.
Vivo X21 Display Better
Vivo X21 has a 6.28-inch FHD + display, which comes with Super Amoled Panel, 2280 × 1080 resolution and 402 PPI display density. There is a 19: 9 aspect ratios display which makes it a bit difficult to use with one hand. Apart from this, it is also difficult to reach top edge, which is common in the smartphone coming with a large display.
Vivo X21 has been given the top notch. But, if you are not the fan of the notch, then you have to admit it. At the same time, the display has been protected from the Third Generation Corning Gorilla Glass. Display Bright and offer good color.

A little change in brightness level will be seen if you change your viewing angle. But, it will not be a problem in normal use. Vivo has introduced ‘Eye Protection’ in it, which can change font style to third-party app display ratio with Night mode as well. There was no problem seeing the display in sunlight. But due to the reflexive screen, there are some shades in it.
Vivo X21 Operating Systems and Performance
The X21 smartphone runs on Android 201 iPlayer and Android 8.1 with Oreo-based Funtouch OS4 at Android Security Patch Level. In the Funtouch OS4, the company has given a custom skin. It includes pre-installed system apps (camera UI, clock, music, calendar, app icon, style of Android notification, swipe and settings app for quick access from the button).
In X21, vivo.com, Email, vivoCloud, iManager, i Theme, Bowser and V-Appstore have been provided by third-party apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, WPS Office, UC Browser, Amazon Store, NewsPoint, PhonePe and Vivo. The company has also provided bloatware with Google Apps.
If you talk about Funtouch OS 4.0 then this is Android’s skin. The OS gives its users the option of hiding the notification preview, shows the speed of the network in the status bar, supports support navigation gestures similar to iOS, game mode and doo note comes with disturb mode. Along with this, the device always adjusts the on-display according to the battery level. All of this are not available in the stock version of Android and users have to install different apps for all these tasks. OS also offers nifty features like Wi-Fi display, which I can not test, there is a Smart Split, One-Hand Mode, App Clone, Smart Motion and Smart Click.
If you talk about performance then X21 gives a good performance. The device has Adrino 512 GPU with Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC Octa-Core CPU clocked at 2.2 GHz. It has 6GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage. If you want to increase its storage then the phone has a hybrid sim slot. In this you can use up to 256 GB microSD card.
By using this phone I played Modern Combat 5, Gear.Club and Dead Trigger 2 games, in which I had no problems. It did not cause much heat during playing X21. This meant that the performance of Snapdragon 835 and 845 at SoC was far better.
In-display fingerprint sensor
In-display fingerprint scanner is the biggest feature of this smartphone. If right, such a technology can stretch the customers to a large extent. But, this is a little slower than the deadline fingerprint scanner. I had to use fingerprint sensor more than once to unlock the phone.
The in-display fingerprint scanner is given at the bottom half of the display. Vivo has also released a guide for the Always-On Fingerprint Symbol, which has worked a lot for users.
However, many times the fingerprint scanner failed when registering. It is pointing out that the company needs more work on this technology.
vivo x21 Camera Department
The dual camera setup in the device is given in the back-up. The back has a 12-megapixel f / 1.8 aperture and 5-megapixel sensor f / 2.4 aperture camera combination. The camera setup on the back has been given Face detection autofocus technology, LED flash and 12-megapixel sensor on the front.
With the help of front and back camera in the phone, users can record the video in 4K resolution. The pictures clicked from the back camera were better in a good lighting condition. But, HDR mode has surprised me a lot. With the help of HDR mode I could capture the whole scene on the dark area. If seen then it is perfectly good.
Some photos were clicked in Low Light Condition, which showed a lack of detail and texture. Let’s look at the photos clicked by the phone. With the help of front and back camera you can click pictures in portrait mode and HDR mode. Users can also shoot ‘Live’ images. For this ‘Live Photo’ mode has been given. See sample below.
Vivo X21 Battery Life
The device has a non-removable lithium-ion battery of 3,200mAh for power backup. After charging it once in the heavy usage, it lasts for 8-9 hours and a 10-11 hour backup will be available in the Moderate Usage.
Conclusion: Should You Buy The Vivo X21?
Vivo X21 is an all-round smartphone that features good camera performance, good camera performance and new in-display fingerprint scanning technology. However, the price of this phone reminded me of the fact that this technology is so good. At the same time, the recently launched OnePlus 6, which you can think of buying.
