Essential Phone Review: It’s a Next Generation Phone

With no track record of smartphones making, the android founder, Mr. Andy Rubin introduced a superb smartphone called Essential Phone or Essential PH-1 in May this year with effective price tag of Rs 44655 only.  When I saw this cell phone, I has decided, I will buy as it is a superb device. Its camera, design, OS and price, all these make it impressive and first rate smartphone but don’t make it perfect phone. It has not headphone jack and water resistance. Its impeccable fit and finish make it next generation first phone. The Essential PH-1 is a truly beautiful smartphone as it comes with its impressive bezel-less design.

Apart from this, the phone loaded with improved battery life and it boots its performance. Unfortunately, smartphone cameras have gotten so good that Essential’s purely OK shooter will frustrate some.

Essential Phone Design and Display

There is no doubt that the Essential PH-1 is the first beautiful smartphone that manages to fit a 5.7-inch 2,560 x 1,312 display into a chassis that’s not much larger. The touch of the phone is very soft and smooth as its body is made by titanium; the rear utilizes. The fully glass mobile has no any logo on the phone and back is minimal and sleek.  If you compare it with the Google Pixel XL, it’s almost same size in the hand, but Essential phone has much more screen size (PH-1: 5.7 inch and Pixel XL: 5.5 inch). From its impeccable fit and finish to its impressive bezel-less design brings it to a new level of bezel reduction. There is small bezel “chin” on the bottom of the phone, but the screen spreads over the top of it. At the top, selfie camera is featured at the mid top of the phone for a perfect selfie.

Its design much higher durability as it is loaded with a titanium frame, whereas other mobiles oft used aluminum body. Essential offers a decent look as it is designed with ultra glossy ceramic on the phone’s outer. You can see the assortment of volume rocker, power button and USB-C charging port, but you will not get a 3.5 mm headphone jack on it. There are no official logo on the back and front side. The 80% backside is flat compare to front side. A fingerprint senor is featured on its top.

Andy Rubin, the maker of this phone, developed it on the pure Android. The smart-phone offers same android experience as the Google Pixel. Currently, it runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, but soon it will be upated in Android 8.0 Oreo.  We all agree that it is a solid performance smartphone.

Now we come to its 360 degree camera, the Essential PH-1 is loaded with primary dual 13 MP camera and 8 MP secondary camera with new features and multiple shoot modes including set a timer, HDR modes etc. The 13MP camera has various lenses that are capable for shooting in color as well as black and white. Means you can click the picture in black and white with Mono mode. You can also shoot a slow-motion video. By front camera, you can take selfie and you can record a video.

If you are thinking that the Essential PH-1 comes with high end specs, but the cell-phone is adequate for the enthusiasts as it has effectively the same features as every other smartphones have in 2017. The phone comes with 128 GB internal storage space and 4 GB RAM. There is no any card slot.

There are two specs that aren’t included, a waterproofing IP rating or a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Essential PH-1 comes with three alert types including vibration, MP3, WAV ringtones. You can put this phone on loudspeaker with stereo speakers.

Low Battery Life

The Essential PH-1 is powered by a 3,040mAh battery that has no more capacity than a day. It has low battery life. Staring at 8 pm, when you use it, then you would get 17% battery around 6 pm in evening. The battery power reaches 17 or less than by pm, when you perform various activities including browsing the web, taking lots of photos, watching a few YouTube videos, and playing a game.

The Essential phone measures 141.5 mm height, 71.1mm width, 7.8 thickness and 185 grams weight. The mobile is loaded with 10 finger multitouch finger print to unlock the phone. The phone supports GSM, CDMA, FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE services.

Essential Phone is not first cell-phone that has less bezel on the frame. Theretofore, its rivals have come in exist.  There are two best smartphones, Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8 Plus and Google Pixel that give a tough competition to the Essential PH-1. Both the competitor comes with skimpy bezels with lots of horsepower and dynamic displays. LG G6 is another competitor that compete the Essential in term of camera specification. G6 also packs with dual cameras.

Verdict: Opt or Not

When it was unveiled, user expected that it comes with many features but they have disappointed according to their desires of accessories. Though, where it stands in its early days is just as a phone that has a lot of promises to fulfill. When we see its design part, it is the beautiful first move. It offers a new android experience to its users.

Good points:

Negative Points:

  • Somewhat disappointing camera
  • Module system unproven
  • No headphone jack
  • A total fingerprint magnet
  • Expensive
  • Accessory port isn’t of much use without accessories
